A *capacitor* can store electric energy in the form of separated charges: it works like a battery.
In its simplest form, a *capacitor* consists of two plates with an air gap between them. If there are positive charges on the upper plate and negative charges on the lower plate, they cannot simply move towards each other because of the gap between them.
A current only flows when we connect the upper and lower plates.

In industry, more sophisticated designs are used increase amount of charge that a capacitor can store.
