An *ion* is a charged particle which is corresponds to an atom with too many or too little electrons. In a neutral [[Bohr Model|atom]], the number of electrons equals the number of protons in the core.
If we remove an electron from the atom's shell, the atom is positively charged. If the atom, on the other hand, gets an additional electron, it will be charged negatively.
